DMS is the recently-expanded team of Steve Lamos and Ben Wilson. It
features towering guitar loops, jazz drumming, programmed keyboards,
samples, and assorted gizmos and gadgets. Lamos and Wilson began colaborating fresh off
their stint as the rhythm section for Cargo artists the Firebird Band, whose constant touring helped to solidify the rapport between the
two. Reference points for the DMS sound include everything from Miles to
Sly, Squarepusher to Gastr Del Sol, and Drive Like Jehu to Iceburn .
In addition to their work in the Firebird, both Lamos and Wilson have
worked with many of the midwest's finest post-rockers. Lamos has spent much of the last
ten years in Champaign-Urbana bands of one sort or another, including a
three-year stint as drummer and co-songwriter for influential Polyvinyl artists American Football, a stint in
the File 13 artists National Skyline, and trumpet work on several albums
for the likes of Braid and
Absinthe Blind. Wilson spent four years as the heart of Back of
Dave and Mei Ling, as well as a short time thickening the sound of the
recently-deceased Bargos Steeler.
The debut production release for DMS was a solo effort on the part of Lamos, a 6-song EP recorded and mixed in the twin-cities by Jimmie Myers
and Brendan Gamble (who has engineered sessions for the likes of American
Football, Braid, Sarge, and Wolfie). The disc also includes video footage
of two live tracks (one of them unreleased), viewable with Quicktime or
Windows Media Player, both of which are free downloads. A new full-length
DMS album featuring the expanded line-up is in the works for early 2002.
DMS has shared the stage with the likes of 5ive Style, Oval, Q and Not U,
Ted Leo, Pele, Dalek, Add N to X, the Faint, HIM, Del Rey, the Up On In, the Promise Ring, Utah!,
Haymarket Riot, the Firebird Band, Red Shirt Brigade, Volta Do Mar, and
countless others.
