Volta Do Mar is a Portuguese term. When translated into English ~ Turn of the Sea.

After exploding from the gates with their self-titled EP (AV016), Volta Do Mar capitalized on their momentum by heading in to the studio with Mike Lust (L’Altra, Sweep the Leg Johnny, Atom Bomb Pocket Knife, Ten Grand) to record a follow up full length album. At the Speed of Light or Day was recorded over several nights and weekends in Chicago at a steel wire processing plant (not kidding) on Lust’s mobile recording unit and mastered at Kingsize Sound Labs by Mike Hagler. After rolling tape through numerous improvisational collaborations and scripted songs, thirteen tracks came together for At the Speed of Light or Day - a shimmering masterpiece of instrumental prowess that defies comparisons. Volta Do Mar will strike a chord with fans of diverse, beautiful music, and some have compared their sound to elements of Tortoise, Frank Zappa, King Crimson, the Fucking Champs and Pele. We don't really feel that comparisons are necessary, but use them if you must.

Through dedication and hard work by Volta Do Mar and TEAM AV, the buzz about the band has spread from Chicago outward, and At the Speed of Light or Day has been widely received by fans and the media. The accolades have come in from all corners, and you can see Volta Do Mar’s name popping up all over – on the t-shirt of MTV host Iann Robinson, in feature articles in Guitar Player, Amplifier, Ghetto Blaster, Giant Robot, Muddle, Copper Press and Devil In the Woods, in newspapers like the Portland Mercury, the Seattle Weekly, the Durham Independent and the Tampa Weekly Planet.

At a performance at the South By Southwest music festival Volta Do Mar piqued the interests of everyone from MTV's Robinson (who described their album by saying "it's fucking brilliant, I love it.") to the Japanese label Contact Records. There is little wonder why At the Speed of Light or Day is the top selling release for TEAM AV.

Volta Do Mar has played hundreds of shows. In the year since its release, the have played more than 150 shows in support of AV019 – in one single tour they played at the inaugural TINY, KING OF FESTIVALS (Vancouver, BC, Canada), GAINESVILLE SUMMER MUSIC + FILM SHOWCASE 2002 (Gainesville, FL), INDEPENDENT GEORGIA FESTIVAL (Atlanta, GA), 'SUP MAGAZINE SHOWCASE (@ The Knitting Factory in New York, NY), DETROIT SUMMER SMASH (Detroit, MI), and BLOOMINGTON FEST (Bloomington, IN). They have also performed at both the South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, and the College Music Journal’s showcase marathon in New York City.

Their tours have taken them around North America several times, including dates with such diverse acts as American Analog Set, Hot Hot Heat, Oxes, Dianogah, Bardo Pond, Tara Jane O'Neil, Pele, Hey Mercedes, The Fire Show, Har Mar Superstar, the White Octave, DMS, Ekoostic Hookah, Lenola, Aspera, Aerogramme, Mates of State, Utah!, The Intima, Damien Jurado, Roots of Orchis, Check Engine, Cheer Accident, Little Joe Gould, Adam’s Castle, From Monument to Masses, Thumbnail, Skeleton Key, Atom Bomb Pocket Knife, Owen, et cetera, ad nauseum. Mass hysteria constantly looms on the horizon.

We certainly hope that you will enjoy the experience of listening to Volta Do Mar, and that you will contact us with your thoughts on the album, the band, and the experience. We of course welcome you to contact us regarding interviews, photo spreads, and other promotional opportunities as well, or if you just want to introduce yourselves. Thank you for listening. - Eric J Herboth, TEAM AV
